Christian Schwarzwald’s idea of drawing is that of an all-encompassing and unrestricted medium. Since drawing is everything for him, almost everything is drawn into his universe.
For the exhibition “Christian Schwarzwald | POLYGRAPH” he has now transformed the KunstHaus Potsdam into a walk-in world of images that can be discovered until April 11. POLYGRAPH translates as polygraph and refers to a lie detector that measures a wide variety of physical reactions and records them graphically. Christian Schwarzwald also uses seismography to trace the meanings of handwriting and typeface. He examines the proximity and distance that we necessarily need to images and language in order to be able to see and understand at all. His expansive all-over structures, which temporarily transform the KunstHaus, can be experienced with every line quite present, almost haptically and with a haunting presence. “We all learn to grasp and understand the world by trying things out and drawing,” is how Christian Schwarzwald formulates the essence of his artistic discipline.
