Bauer’s translation was selected by an independent jury from numerous anonymous submissions by translators of contemporary Austrian literature. The prize, worth $4,500, is to be presented at an event in New York next year, when the English edition of “Palace of Flies” is also scheduled to be published by New York’s New Vessel Press.
In a special broadcast on February 28 by Trafika Europe Radio (TER), an Internet radio station specializing in European literature, TER founder Andrew Singer talks with Georg Bauer about Palace of Flies, a historical novel about the aging and ailing writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal in the mid-1920s. Contributions from German author and literary critic Michael Maar, Michael Wise, juror and New York publisher at New Vessel Press, and ACFNY director Michael Haider round out the program, which can be accessed as a podcast afterwards.
To watch the broadcast live on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. in New York (7 p.m. GMT in London, 8 p.m. CET in Austria, 11 a.m. PT in Los Angeles), click here.
