These days we commemorate the foundation of the 2nd Republic of Austria as well as the end of the Second World War 75 years ago. On this occasion we want to remember the prerequisites and basic values of democracy. We want to do this with literature, because literature can find a language for this, which still has something to say to us today.

In cooperation with the ÖB Skopje, we produced the online reading “Defending Democracy” in Berlin with Gregorij H. v. Leïtis, founder of The Lahr von Leïtis Academy & Archive and Michael Lahr, Executive Director of The Lahr von Leitis Academy & Archive, who could not travel to Skopje for the planned events. The Academy’s main concern is education in the context of history and culture, and its proven method is literary collage. Mr. Lahr gives an introduction, Mr. von Leitis reads texts by, among others, Hermynia zur Mühlen, Joseph Roth, Erich Kästner and Klaus Mann.

Further readings and concerts are offered as online events, links to cultural tips are also shared via the social media of the ÖB Berlin, proven publication formats such as Kosmos Österreich are used. The website is intended to create a network Austria for artists and scientists. And it is not only in times of Corona that regular reporting on German cultural and scientific policy remains an important part of our work.
