The Cultural Forum of the Austrian Embassy in Mexico is pleased to invite you to the first face-to-face event in over a year:
On June 3, 2021, the exhibition “Más alla del Surrealismo” (Beyond Surrealism), curated by the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato – Museo de Arte e Historia de Guanajuato in collaboration with the Franz Mayer Museum, about the Austrian artist Wolfgang Paalen (Vienna, Austria, 1905 – Taxco, Mexico, 1959), will be formally opened in Leon, GTO, in the presence of the Austrian Ambassador Dr. Elisabeth Kehrer.
The exhibition consists of a selection of 51 artworks and 49 facsimile prints of photographs and documents that trace a journey through the various creative phases, themes and obsessions that accompanied Wolfgang Paalen’s artistic and theoretical production. The selection was made from the art collection and personal holdings that Isabel Marín, widow of the artist, dedicated to the Franz Mayer Museum in 2005.

This exhibition offers an unprecedented approach to the artistic production and controversial personality of the so-called “dissident surrealist” who found a way to express and anticipate a different vision of the order of things in the American space.
On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition on June 3, the public will be treated to the performance of Claudia Chibici-Revneanu (Austria), accompanied on the piano by Judith Campos Galeana (Mexico) with the works of:
Maria Theresa of Paradis (1759-1824): from “Siegwart”; Alma Schindler Mahler (1879-1964): “Laue Sommernacht”, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791): Non so più cosa son, from Le nozze di Figaro also a very special musical performance.
The exhibition opening will also be available to watch digitally via Facebook Live Streaming on June 3, starting at 7:00 p.m. (Mexico time).
