Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2021 / Cultural Forum Tokyo

World premiere of "TEHOM" by finalist Jakob Gruchmann

Austrian composer Jakob Gruchmann emerged as one of the four finalists of the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2021 from 91 entries from 32 countries. His composition “TEHOM” for large orchestra, together with the three other nominated works, was premiered by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (Dir. Kanako Abe) at the Tokyo Opera City Concert HallTakemitsu Memorial” on May 30, 2021 for the final decision.


The Toru Takemitsu Composition Award has been presented annually since 1997. Tōru Takemitsu (1930-1996) was a Japanese composer who, in addition to music, was also enthusiastic about literature and painting and made a name for himself through avant-garde and multimedia performances with the artist:ing group Experimentelle Werkstatt, which he founded.
Jakob Gruchmann (*1991 Salzburg) studied composition and music theory at the Mozarteum University and at the University of Art in Graz. His compositional output includes more than 70 works ranging from solo to orchestral music. He is Senior Artist for Composition at the Gustav Mahler Private University of Music.
