Immersive installation by Kurt Hentschläger

“SUB,” the audio-visual installation by New York-based Austrian media artist Kurt Hentschläger, explores human perception as well as the longing for experiences that can be perceived with great subtlety. “SUB” induces a simple yet dramatic shift in perception and is presented to the audience in complete darkness. The installation relies on the loss of visual control and a subsequent shift in spatial awareness, creating a sense of meditative stasis. The all-encompassing darkness of “SUB” is shattered at intervals and only for fractions of a second by animated bursts of intense bright light. As visitors fall back into the darkness, afterimages are experienced on the retina, slowly drifting away until the next burst of light is finally triggered. The visual and acoustic impressions vary considerably, creating a unique experience for visitors. The experience of “SUB” creates time and space for a meditative pause, a moment of minimized visual perception without the noise and distractions that our hyper-mediatized world creates.

Hentschlaeger’s works are characteristically visceral, immersive, and known for their perceptual effects. His working practice is experimental and interdisciplinary, most evident in his ephemeral audio-visual environments and live shows between visual art, music and theater.
