February 20, 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the statue of Enver Hoxha, symbolizing the end of the Stalinist-influenced regime in Albania. In commemoration of this event, the Institute for Democracy, Media and Culture (IDMC) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation organized the 6th edition of the “Memory Days” from February 19-26 with the support of the OSCE and the Embassies of Austria and Germany.
The Memory Days were opened in the presence of the Albanian President Ilir Meta with a lecture by Oliver Jens Schmitt (University of Vienna), in which he addressed the state of research on the history of communism in Albania.
On February 24, IDMC and the Austrian Embassy Tirana showed the 1984 ORF reportage “Albania from Skanderbeg to Enver Hodscha”. Its author, Paul Lendvai, and his cameraman Stephan Mussil then participated in the online panel discussion with writer and former political prisoner Fatos Lubonja and historian Idrit Idrizi.
