19 large paintings and a series of video testimonies of historical performances by the legendary Hermann Nitsch are on display between September 25 and December 6 in the exhibition “Ritualuri/Rituals” at MARe, the Museum of Recent Art Bucharest, in cooperation with the Nitsch Foundation and with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum Bucharest. Hermann Nitsch, one of the founders of the Wiener Aktionismus, is one of the most versatile contemporary artists as a painter, graphic artist, composer, actionist, and stage designer. “The period covered by the exhibition presents the show as a compact retrospective, starting with the iconic blood and wax works of the early 1970s, accompanied by extensive video documentation of crucial performances, and continuing with the ongoing series of ‘Schüttbilder’ with some remarkable, large works from 2007 to 2020,” says art historian Erwin Kessler, general director of MARe and curator of the exhibition “Ritualuri/Rituals”.
